Free Printable Tooth Brushing Chart
Every since my son was diagnosed with Autism I’ve always sworn by visual aids to help him learn. At first it was PECs (Picture Exchange Communication) Where I basically had photos of just about everything the he ate, drank or played with. Including the people in his life, he would hand me the photo of a juice bottle or toy to request it. But of course, being as clever as he is he soon learned to ask and even demand whatever he wanted.
Offering a reward system like earning token for Autistic children is a very good way to encourage them to complete tasks. Many people assume the child won’t understand, but you’d be surprised what they can take in. Reward systems are good for all kids, not just special needs, who doesn’t like to earn a treat! The Boss loves picking what he wants as his rewards and earning tokens to get them. Recently tooth brushing became an issue, he started out loving being allowed to it himself and feeling like a big boy, but then the novelty wore off and we started hearing “But I did that already!” or “I’ll do it the next day!”. So I made him his very own chart for earning medals when he brushes his teeth. Not only for incentive but also so he can see how many times he needs to brush his teeth every day. It shows morning and night for the whole week, and if he completes it he earns a treat... Such as a chocolate bar (ironic I know... but least I’m safe in the knowledge that he’ll brush his teeth later!)
Rewards don’t need to be huge or expensive, but they should be things he or she wouldn’t normally get.
Here’s the chart I made for my little man, feel free to download it and get your kids excited about dental hygiene! Pop it up on the wall in or outside your bathroom where your tykes can reach, but keep the token up high so they aren’t tempted to cheat!!
